No matter where we come from or what we look like, we want to live in a place where all of us can thrive and live a full life with our friends and family. However, many of our neighbors are struggling to pay for food and rent, while the wealthy make record profits. Washington's has the most upside-down tax code in the nation, where our poorest families pay SIX TIMES more of their income in taxes than the richest. This only exacerbates inequality.
Our state legislature needs to provide for and fully fund the core pillars of our economy, but not on the backs of working people through regressive taxes. A tax on Washington's ultra-wealthy is a step toward transforming our unfair system and building a society where we can all thrive. Only ultra-wealthy Washingtonians would pay the wealth tax, but the money raised could fund public programs we rely on such as public education, health care, and child care.
During the 2021 and 2022 legislative sessions, thousands of people showed their support for the wealth tax. Washingtonians are telling us loud and clear: it's time for the ultra-wealthy to pay what they owe so we can have healthy public schools, roads and bridges in good condition, and thriving communities.
