I urge you to support a progressive agenda for the 2020 legislative session that addresses the urgency of climate change, supports working families, and reforms the criminal justice system.

One of our highest priorities this year should be to act on climate change, and a Clean Fuel Standard is a critical part of fighting the climate crisis. Not only would it reduce pollution and bring cleaner air to Washington’s families, it would begin to address the long-standing inequalities pushed onto low-income communities and communities of color that are the most impacted by the climate crisis.

Balancing our state's upside down tax code is another priority that needs to be tackled this session. Washington continues to be the most regressive state in the nation on taxes. We need you to fully fund the Working Families Tax Credit, which puts funds back into the pockets of those who need it most and brings them more financial stability to handle rent, groceries, and even dreaded medical emergencies and other expenses. Help working families across the state thrive by ending the unnecessary capital gains tax break and by supporting the Working Families Tax Credit.

Finally, I want the legislature to address our criminal justice system, which disproportionally hurts communities of color, including preventing thousands of Washingtonians from voting for years after serving their time. This year, please support legislation that would restore voting eligibility to people with an incarceration history who have served their time, re-entered society, and are under community supervision.

While this is not a comprehensive list, it is an essential foundation to achieving a more prosperous and just Washington for all of the state's residents. As we start this legislative session, I urge you to strengthen our communities, combat climate change, and reduce the injustices inflicted by our criminal justice system.
