Placing guardrails on anticompetitive negotiating tactics between providers and insurers is a key step to driving down health care prices.

Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote yes on SB 5393, a bill that will help address the negative impacts of health care system consolidation.

When large, consolidated health systems own too much of our state marketplace, they are able to negotiate high prices with insurers, often resulting in higher prices of 20% or more - without improving health outcomes or quality of patient care. Placing guardrails on anti-competitive negotiating tactics between providers and insurers is a key step to driving down health care prices.

Here in Washington, the Everett Clinic (a clinic owned by the major conglomerate UnitedHealth Group) bought up a small family physician clinic in Bellevue and required Premera to accept 50% higher prices overnight, just because they were newly affiliated. These types of anticompetitive negotiating tactics are hurting patients, workers, and business owners.

SB 5393 will help drive down the cost of health care by preventing common anti-competitive practices in contract negotiations been insurers and providers.
