People in Washington with low and middle incomes pay six times more of their income in taxes than the wealthy, depriving our state of the funding we need to provide affordable medicine, good schools, and safe homes in all our communities.

The Capital Assets Ownership Tax is a critical step to funding these basics that Washington families need and balancing our upside-down tax code. Most of us hold our wealth in the ownership of our homes, and we pay taxes on the assessed value every year to fund our communities’ needs. Washington’s wealthiest hold much of their wealth in the stock market, but are not required to pay taxes on it. A 1% tax on the ownership of financial assets like stocks and bonds over $100 million is the best way to ensure the wealthy few step up and pay what they owe into the communities where they live and the amenities they have long benefitted from.
