If we truly aim for justice, showing up at marches isn’t enough. We must balance our tax code by making the wealthy pay their share and invest the money in communities hit the hardest. I urge you to avoid knee-jerk budget cuts and make wealthy people and corporations pay their share in order to keep investments flowing into our communities.

As the protests for Black lives sweep the nation, it's time for legislators to consider the opportunity to pave a new path forward for equity in Washington state. We know that more budget cuts during an economic downturn will only worsen the pain for millions of Washingtonians, especially communities of color. From higher unemployment rates and mortgage defaults to business bankruptcies, every modern recession has been more severe for Black people than anyone else.

During the Great Recession, the Legislature cut more than $10 billion from the state budget, which disproportionately impacted Black and brown Washingtonians. This time, it is essential that we avoid cuts to essential services while millions of Washingtonians are already struggling to get by. From health care and food assistance to affordable housing and education, our friends and neighbors are relying on the support of the state government more than ever during this emergency. A path to recovery that is consistent with our values should prioritize new revenue instead of cuts. I urge you to invest in our communities, not cut away the lifeline so many are depending on for survival.  As part of these investments, I encourage you to support direct cash payments to low-income Washingtonians in the form of a Recovery Rebate.

We must not repeat our mistakes of the Great Recession. This time, we must balance our tax code by making the wealthy pay their share and invest the money in communities hit the hardest.
