In America, freedom means freedom for everyone—including transgender people.

Washington passed anti-discrimination laws in 2006 that protect transgender people from losing a job, being denied housing, or from being denied the use of a public place such as a bathroom based on their gender identity. Since 2006, many transgender and gender non-conforming people have used the bathroom consistent with the gender they live as without any harm done to others.

Unfortunately, a recent bill—HB 2589 / SB 6443—targets new rules put in place by the Washington Human Rights Commission that are consistent with the Washington Law Against Discrimination passed in 2006. A public, three-year process created these rules without a single objection.

Nothing in the Human Rights Commission rules changes the fact that it is illegal to enter a restroom to harm or harass people, or invade someone’s privacy. Transgender people have been safely using locker rooms and bathrooms consistent with their gender identity for more than a decade.  There is no evidence that a transgender person is more likely to engage in criminal activity or inflict violence. In fact, the sad truth is that transgender people and gender non-conforming people are often targets of violence and the homicide rate against transgender individuals has reached a historic high just last year.

Please do not support HB 2589 or SB 6443 as these will open the door to lawsuits and take away basic rights and protections for transgender people. Discrimination has no place in our communities or workplaces.
