Deadly, military-style assault weapons specifically designed to kill large numbers of people quickly have contributed to the gun violence in our state, including recent mass shootings in Mukilteo, Spokane, and Burlington.

It’s time for Washington state to prioritize public safety by limiting access to these extraordinarily deadly weapons, and protect our communities by passing House Bill 1240.

I urge you to bring House Bill 1240 to a vote to protect our communities from mass shootings by banning the sale and transfer of assault weapons.

We deserve to go to schools, live in our neighborhoods, and enjoy our lives safe from gun violence. But assault weapons, semi-automatic firearms specifically designed to kill humans quickly and in large numbers, have been pumped into our communities by the gun industry. More than 85% of the deaths in mass shootings have been caused by assault rifles, which are more lethal than other types of guns.

During the 10-year period when the federal assault weapons ban was in effect, mass shooting fatalities were 70% less likely to occur compared to periods before and after the ban. That’s why it’s so important that we ban the sale of these military-style assault rifles in our state.

Gun violence is an urgent public health epidemic. And while no one law will “solve” this complex epidemic, it is clear that assault weapons have no place in our communities. Please bring to the House floor and vote YES on HB 1240 to protect our families from the gun violence that is intensified by assault weapons.
